Note · This is a plain-language template provided for transparency. It is not a substitute for legal advice; the final, binding policy will be confirmed before public launch.
1. Introduction
Gmatri (“Gmatri”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) is a Tamil-first South Indian matrimony service operated from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. We take the privacy of your personal data seriously — especially because matrimony involves sensitive information about you and your family.
This Privacy Policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, the legal basis for processing, who we share it with, how long we keep it, and the rights you have. It is written to be consistent with India’s Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 (DPDP Act) and, for users in the European Economic Area and the UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). For the purposes of these laws, Gmatri is the data fiduciary / controller of your personal data. By using Gmatri you also agree to our Terms of Service.
2. Data we collect
To provide a matrimony service, we collect the following categories of personal data:
- Contact & account data — mobile phone number (used for OTP sign-in), and any email address you provide.
- Identity & basic profile — name, gender, date of birth, marital status, mother tongue, and (where you choose) government-ID verification details.
- Community & background — religion, caste / sub-caste, gothram, and family background.
- Location — city, state, native place, and country.
- Education & career — qualifications, profession, employer, and income range.
- Family details — family type, values, and parent / sibling information you add.
- Photos & media — profile photographs and voice intro recordings.
- Horoscope & astrology data — date, time, and place of birth, and the nakshatra, rasi, chart, dosham, and porutham information computed from them.
- Partner preferences — the criteria you set for the match you are seeking.
- Usage & device data — interests sent and received, shortlists, messages metadata, app interactions, IP address, device and browser information, and approximate location derived from your IP.
Sensitive personal data
Several of these categories are treated as sensitive and are handled with extra care — in particular your religion, caste / community, date of birth, location, photographs, and horoscope / astrology data. We collect these only because they are central to matrimonial matching, and we process them on the basis of the consent you provide when you add them.
3. How we use your data & purposes
We use your personal data to:
- Create and manage your account and authenticate you via OTP.
- Build your matrimonial profile and show it to relevant matches, subject to your visibility settings.
- Compute porutham, horoscope charts, and compatibility on every match.
- Enable interests, shortlists, voice intros, and chat between connected users.
- Keep the Service safe — verifying profiles, moderating photos and content, and detecting fraud, fake profiles, and abuse.
- Send you service messages and notifications you have opted into (push, SMS, email, WhatsApp).
- Improve, troubleshoot, and secure the Service, and comply with legal obligations.
4. Legal basis & consent
Under the DPDP Act, we process your personal data based on the consent you give when you create your profile and add details, and for certain legitimate uses permitted by law. Under the GDPR, our legal bases are your consent (in particular for sensitive / special-category data such as religion, caste, and other profile details), the performance of our contract with you (to provide the Service), our legitimate interests (safety, fraud prevention, and improving the Service), and compliance with legal obligations.
You can withdraw your consent at any time — for example by editing or removing a field, changing your visibility settings, or deleting your account. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing carried out before withdrawal, and some features may stop working without the relevant data.
5. Third-party processors we use
We do not sell your personal data. To run the Service we use, or may use, trusted third-party providers who process data on our behalf under appropriate agreements:
- SMS / OTP delivery — MSG91, to send one-time passwords and transactional SMS.
- Media storage & content delivery — Cloudflare R2 and CDN, to store and serve photos and voice intros.
- Image moderation — Sightengine, to help detect unsafe or non-compliant photos.
- Push notifications — Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) and Apple Push Notification service (APNs), to deliver app notifications.
- Error monitoring — Sentry, to capture diagnostic and crash information so we can fix problems.
These providers receive only the data needed to perform their function. Some are located outside India; where we transfer data internationally, we use safeguards consistent with applicable law. We may also disclose data where required by law, regulation, or valid legal process, or to protect the rights and safety of users and the public.
6. Photo visibility & sharing with other users
Matrimony is inherently social: the profile details you publish are shown to potential matches. You control who sees your photos — by default, profile photos remain private and are revealed only after you accept an interest, and you can change this at any time. Please be mindful that information you share with another user (including in chat) may be retained or copied by that person outside our control.
7. Data retention
We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide the Service. When you delete your account, we delete or irreversibly anonymise your personal data within a reasonable period, except where we must retain certain records to meet legal, accounting, fraud-prevention, or dispute-resolution obligations, or in routine backups that are cleared on a rolling schedule.
8. Your rights
Subject to applicable law, you have the right to exercise the following over your personal data:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
- Correction — correct or update inaccurate or incomplete data.
- Erasure / right to be forgotten — request deletion of your data.
- Withdraw consent — withdraw consent for processing where it is based on consent.
- Portability — receive your data in a portable format (GDPR users).
- Grievance redressal — raise a complaint with our Grievance Officer and, if unresolved, with the relevant Data Protection Board / supervisory authority.
You can exercise most of these rights directly from Settings — you can export your data and delete your account there — or by contacting us at privacy@gmatri.in. We will respond within the timelines required by applicable law and may ask you to verify your identity first.
9. Cookies & sessions
We use cookies and similar technologies that are necessary to keep you signed in, remember your language preference, secure the Service, and understand basic, aggregated usage. We do not use them for third-party advertising. You can control cookies through your browser settings, though disabling essential cookies may prevent sign-in from working.
10. Security
We use reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your data, including encryption in transit, access controls, and stripping of photo metadata (such as EXIF location) on upload. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security; please help by keeping your phone number and device safe and never sharing your OTP. If a personal-data breach occurs, we will notify the relevant authorities and affected users as required by law.
11. Children
The Service is strictly for adults aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If we learn that an account belongs to a minor, we will delete it. If you believe a minor has provided us data, please contact us at privacy@gmatri.in.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “last updated” date above and, where appropriate, notify you within the Service. Please review it periodically.
